My Work: Influenced by Juergen Teller

photos in circles

Juergen Teller is very well known for his commercial photography, particularly for his shoots for Marc Jacobs. In this particular example, the product advertised is a perfume, Dot. Here, Teller's photos are presented within circles on a white background. The use of circles compliments the ladybird design and title of 'Dot' and I feel it is a very effective way of presenting, Marc Jacobs and Juergen Teller's collaborations often featuring alot of white space and the same minimalist type face. This technique is also effective in terms of advertising, the circle adding something visually new to the viewer, drawing them in, and the use of white space allows for all attentions to be focussed on the product itself. I decided to see what it would look like if I presented some of my own photographs in this format.

my interpretation

I like to use a similar colour pallette throughout my own images, and I feel like that the use of white space in this example really compliments my muted coloured photographs well. I think the use of another subject; such as flower or insect along side also compliments a shot of a model/human figure.

Teller is not just known for his commercial work. When I look at his photobooks and even at his exhibition, there were many photographs that were nothing to do with the fashion world, more like snapshots of his daily life with his son, nature shots and animals too. Like his character, alot of his photographs contain hints of humour and have a light hearted feel to them.
